Continuing education versus competency
Questions that were recently asked of the ANA president at the NSNA annual meeting regarding continuing education and mandatory in professional associations

One of the amazing strengths that we enjoy in United States is the Freedom of Choice in so many situations. But yet it has created situations that are hard to explain.
One example came up recently during my attendance at the National Student Nurses Association annual meeting in Grapevine, Texas. What an awesome meeting. This generation of nurses will help advance our profession and the health care industry. I was quite impressed with their preparation for the meeting, the professionalism exhibited, and the significant discussions of issues.
I was asked “how is it possible that one state requires continuing education for license renewal and others do not. How does that determine a basis for ongoing competency? Should not mandatory membership in professional associations also be required to ensure exposure and hopefully knowledge of current trends in the profession?”
Wow, do you see what I was experiencing during NSNA annual meeting?
How would you have responded?
Thanks in advance for your responses
Becky
